Why the can deceives you

Saying that "beer A has 140 calories and B has 90" means almost nothing if A comes in a 350 ml can and B in a 269 ml long neck. The only fair way to compare is to put them all on the same yardstick. We used 100 ml, the denominator that appears on every label, and went to the official data: the official Grupo Heineken Brasil nutrition information PDF (28 complete fact sheets) and the official Budweiser, Amstel and Ambev brand pages, which publish calories but not the full table in readable HTML. The result dismantles a few bar-stool myths.

Traditional lagers: a technical tie

This is the finding that bothers those who pay more thinking they are getting something lighter. Per 100 ml, nearly every common Brazilian lager clusters between 40 and 42 calories, regardless of brand, price or being all-malt:

Stella Artois (all-malt, 40.5), Skol (with corn, 40.7) and Corona Extra (with rice, 40.6) are practically glued together. The calorie count of a traditional lager is dominated by alcohol, not by the type of grain. Each gram of ethanol carries about 7 calories, and that is what sets the level.

All-malt vs adjunct: where the difference really shows

If it is not in the calories, where does all-malt change the game? In flavor, body and composition, not on the scale. All-malt (Stella Artois, Brahma Duplo Malte, Eisenbahn Pilsen, Spaten) uses only water, malt and hops. Adjunct beers (Skol, Antarctica, Corona Extra with rice, Budweiser with rice) replace part of the malt with corn or rice, which makes the beer lighter in flavor and cheaper to produce.

What each one gains and loses: all-malt gains in flavor, body and complexity, and loses on price. Adjunct beer gains in lightness and cost, and loses in depth of flavor. In calories and carbohydrate per 100 ml, the two end up nearly identical. Whoever cuts beer from the diet "because it is not all-malt" is aiming at the wrong variable.Official Ambev brand pages (calories) and the official Grupo Heineken Brasil PDF (full table)

The lab-engineered low-carbs

Here lives the real difference among the ones with alcohol. Michelob Ultra and Amstel Ultra are not "magic all-malt", they are engineered: a more complete fermentation process converts more sugar into alcohol, leaving less carbohydrate in the glass. Michelob Ultra sits around 79 calories in the 355 ml long neck (about 22 kcal per 100 ml) and is advertised by Ambev with "up to 80% less carbohydrate than the ten best-selling beers in Brazil". Amstel Ultra adds up to 72 calories in the 275 ml long neck and positions itself as all-malt, gluten-free and with 35% fewer calories than a regular beer. Stella Pure Gold, gluten-free, has 34 kcal per 100 ml, about 17% less than traditional Stella.

What they lose: body and flavor. Removing carbohydrate and lowering the alcohol content leaves the beer watery to many palates. It is the classic trade, fewer calories for less density. For those who want the social ritual without the full calorie bill, it pays off. For those who drink for flavor, it is a step down.

Zero alcohol: half the calories, and carbohydrate depends on the brewery

The most counterintuitive chapter. Removing alcohol cuts calories almost in half, because ethanol is the beer's main caloric fuel. But it raises carbohydrate, because the malt sugar that would become alcohol stays in the glass. According to the official Grupo Heineken Brasil nutrition information PDF, Heineken 0.0 has 21 kcal and 4.8 g of carbohydrate per 100 ml, against 42 kcal and 3.2 g for regular Heineken: less than half the calories, but more carbohydrate. The same source shows the same pattern in two other zero-alcohol beers from the group: Bavaria 0,0% has 21 kcal and 5.5 g of carbohydrate per 100 ml (regular Bavaria has 38 kcal and 3.4 g), and Schin 0,0% Álcool has 19 kcal and 4.7 g per 100 ml, the leanest in calories in the entire comparison. Budweiser Zero follows the same pattern per the brand's official label (21 kcal and 4.75 g of carbohydrate per 100 ml). As for Corona Cero: the brand's official page does not publish a readable nutrition table (it is a JavaScript shell), so here only the calorie figure already surveyed earlier goes in (about 14.5 kcal per 100 ml), without confirmation of carbohydrate, sodium or alcohol content from a new source.

What changes in the glass between zero-alcohol, low-carb and all-malt

The differences between these three groups, in this dataset, show up in numbers and in production process, not in the impression of whoever drank them. Among the zero-alcohol beers with complete data (Heineken 0.0, Bavaria 0,0%, Schin 0,0% and Budweiser Zero), carbohydrate per 100 ml sits between 4.7 g and 5.5 g, above the 3.2 g to 3.9 g range of the equivalent regular lagers from the same brands. The reason is the process: the malt sugar that normally ferments into ethanol remains in the drink when the alcohol is removed, which is also behind the calorie drop (these four sit between 19 and 21 kcal per 100 ml, against 38 to 42.5 kcal for the regular versions).

Among the all-malt beers with complete data (Eisenbahn Pilsen, 3.5 g of carbohydrate per 100 ml), the process difference from an adjunct lager is the absence of corn or rice in the recipe, replaced by more barley malt; the Eisenbahn Pale Ale label, for example, declares only water, malt and hops as ingredients. As for the "special" beers with more residual extract (Baden Baden Red Ale, 9.5 g of carbohydrate and 89 kcal per 100 ml; Eisenbahn Strong Golden Ale, 10 g and 86 kcal), the higher carbohydrate comes from a fermentation process that leaves more malt sugar unconverted, which also supports the higher alcohol content declared on those labels.

And the Grupo Heineken pattern is not a law of physics, it is the result of each brewery's process. Cervejaria Imigração publishes on its own page the Imigração Pilsen Zero Álcool table with a 100 ml column: 3.4 kcal and 0.2 g of carbohydrate, the leanest in the entire comparison by a wide margin. The same brewery sells Imigração 1824 Lager Zero Carbo, with alcohol, which declares zero carbohydrate, zero sugar, gluten-free and 22 kcal per 100 ml. Both carry the caveat that the gluten-free claim allows up to 20 ppm under current standards. Neither publishes sodium or alcohol content in numbers, so those cells stay without data in the table.

Gains and losses: the summary of each label

  • Corona Cero: gains by being the leanest and the only one with vitamin D. Loses by having more relative carbs and by not being suitable for celiacs (contains gluten).
  • Heineken 0.0 and Budweiser Zero: gain by cutting calories in half and zeroing the alcohol. Lose by raising carbohydrate and by not recovering any workout.
  • Michelob Ultra and Amstel Ultra: gain fewer calories and fewer carbs with alcohol still present. Lose body and flavor.
  • Stella Artois and Brahma Duplo Malte: gain the flavor and complexity of all-malt. Lose on price, not on calories (they tie with the adjunct ones).
  • Skol, Antarctica, Corona Extra: gain lightness and cost. Lose depth of flavor, with no real calorie advantage.

The conclusion the 100 ml yardstick delivers: if the goal is to cut calories, the type of beer matters far less than the volume you drink. A low-carb long neck can weigh less than three glasses of "light" all-malt. And none of them, zero or not, is a recovery drink. As we have already shown in the article on alcohol and training, the drink charges protein synthesis and sleep, however lean it may be on the label.

Answers about the topic

Frequently asked questions

Composição e calorias

Malte, carboidratos e valor energético.

Does all-malt beer make you gain less weight than beer with corn or rice?

In practice, it barely changes the calories. Comparing per 100 ml with official data, an all-malt like Brahma Duplo Malte (40 kcal) is practically tied with Skol Pilsen (40.7 kcal), which uses corn, and with Antarctica (42.5 kcal). What all-malt changes is flavor and body, not the calorie count. The idea that all-malt is diet-friendly is a myth.

Which beer has the fewest calories in Brazil?

Among the ones with alcohol, the engineered low-carbs win: Michelob Ultra sits around 22 kcal per 100 ml and Amstel Ultra at 26 kcal, against the 40 to 42 kcal of common lagers. Among all of them, the zero-alcohol beers are the leanest, with Corona Cero at about 14.5 kcal per 100 ml. But watch the serving size: a large can of low-carb can add up to more than a small glass of a traditional one.

Does 0,0% beer have less carbohydrate than the regular one?

On the contrary, it usually has more. Per the official Heineken label, the 0.0 version has 9.6 g of carbohydrate per 200 ml against 6.4 g for the regular one. The reason is physical: when the alcohol is removed, more residual malt sugar that did not become ethanol is left over. The 0,0% wins on calories (it drops to almost half) but loses on carbohydrate.

Is low-carb beer worth it for those who train?

It is worth it if the goal is to reduce calories and carbohydrate without giving up social drinking. Michelob Ultra and Amstel Ultra use more fermentation to convert sugar into alcohol, leaving fewer carbs behind. But no beer is a recovery food: alcohol, at any level, still hurts protein synthesis and sleep. Low carb is lesser damage, not a benefit.

Álcool e restrições

Versões sem álcool, sem glúten e sem carboidrato.

Does Corona Cero contain alcohol?

No, it is 0,0%. Launched in Brazil in November 2022, starting in Rio de Janeiro, Corona Cero Sunbrew is made by dealcoholizing Corona and is enriched with vitamin D. It has about 48 calories in the 330 ml long neck, according to the brand, with no added sugar. Because it contains gluten, it is not suitable for celiacs.

Which gluten-free beer is there in Brazil?

Three, with an explicit statement on an official manufacturer page: Amstel Ultra, Imigração 1824 Lager Zero Carbo and Imigração Pilsen Zero Álcool. The two Imigração beers come with the caveat the brewery itself publishes: gluten-free while possibly containing up to 20 ppm under current standards, and consult your doctor in case of restriction. In the opposite direction, the official Grupo Heineken Brasil nutrition information PDF declares "contains gluten" on all 28 fact sheets it includes, covering Heineken, Heineken 0.0, Amstel, Bavaria, Bavaria 0,0% and Schin 0,0%. Corona Cero, despite being zero alcohol, also contains gluten and is not suitable for celiacs. Not every "zero" or "light" beer is gluten-free: they are independent characteristics, always check the label.

Is there a zero-carbohydrate beer in Brazil?

There is one: Imigração 1824 Lager Zero Carbo, from Cervejaria Imigração, which the manufacturer itself declares as zero carbohydrate, zero sugar, gluten-free and 22 kcal per 100 ml. Outside of it, every beer in this comparison has carbohydrate above zero. And the most counterintuitive fact still holds for the big ones: among Grupo Heineken's zero-alcohol beers, removing alcohol RAISES carbohydrate instead of lowering it, because the malt sugar that would become ethanol stays in the glass. Heineken 0.0 has 4.8 g against 3.2 g for regular Heineken, and Bavaria 0,0% reaches 5.5 g against 3.4 g for regular Bavaria. As for Imigração Pilsen Zero Álcool, per the manufacturer's official table, it has 0.2 g of carbohydrate and 3.4 kcal per 100 ml, meaning the pattern is not a law: it depends on each brewery's process.
