How BMI is calculated
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m) squared. Example: 75 kg and 1.75 m → 75 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 24.5.
BMI ranges (WHO)
- Below 18.5Underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9Normal weight
- 25 to 29.9Overweight
- 30 to 34.9Obesity class I
- 35 to 39.9Obesity class II
- 40 or moreObesity class III
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not differentiate muscle mass from fat and can be less informative for people who train. Evaluate the result alongside body composition, measurements and professional guidance.

About BMI

What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is weight divided by height squared (kg/m2). It is a quick screening of weight range, not a diagnosis: it does not distinguish muscle mass from fat.
What is the ideal BMI?
The range considered normal by the WHO is 18.5 to 24.9. Below 18.5 is underweight; 25 to 29.9 is overweight; 30 or more is obesity.
Does BMI work for people who train?
Partially. People with a lot of muscle mass can have a high BMI without excess fat. That is why Darwin also uses body composition and measurements, not just BMI.
