Why this year shook up the fast shoe market
Between 2025 and 2026 nearly every brand renewed its top race shoe. The dispute revolves around three variables: lighter and more responsive supercritical foam, carbon plate geometry and midsole height within the World Athletics 40mm limit. The practical result for runners is lower weight and greater energy return, but each model leans toward a type of stride. Below, what was really released and who each one makes sense for.
Important notice: nothing here is a prescription. A supershoe is a race and fast workout tool. The ideal is trying it in store, testing it on short runs before trusting it in a marathon, and assessing what matches your biomechanics.
Nike: Vaporfly 4, Alphafly 4 and the plated daily trainers
- Nike Vaporfly 4: released in March 2025. ZoomX foam with a new carbon Flyplate whose angle went from 15 to 20 degrees. About 10% lighter than the Vaporfly 3, stack of 35mm at the heel and 29mm at the forefoot, 6mm drop. For those who want a fast race with a more stable ride than the Alphafly.
- Nike Alphafly 4: released in January 2026, aligned with the Ekiden season in Japan. The exposed Zoom Air unit is gone, the upper got lighter and the outsole geometry changed, recovering a more aggressive profile. It is the brand's elite marathon model, for strides with strong forefoot rebound.
- Nike Pegasus Premium and Vomero 18: these are daily trainers, not race shoes. The Pegasus Premium gained a full-body Air Zoom unit sculpted in place of the plate, with a shape inspired by the curvature of the running Flyplate. The Vomero 18 uses ZoomX over ReactX, stack of 44mm at the heel and 34mm at the forefoot, 10mm drop. Good for daily volume, not for setting records.
Adidas: Adios Pro 4 and the Evo line that became a legend
- Adizero Adios Pro 4: uses ENERGYRODS 2.0 rods infused with carbon, with a new rocker point in the midsole to improve running economy. Weighs around 200g in a men's US 9. It is the brand's durable marathon supershoe, made for the amateur runner who will not splurge on a limited edition.
- Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2: arrived in April 2025 at 500 dollars, with 3mm more Lightstrike Pro Evo foam than the previous version while still keeping 138g in a men's US 9.5. Stack of 39mm at the heel and 36mm at the forefoot.
- Adizero Adios Pro Evo 3: released on April 27, 2026, also at 500 dollars and in super limited quantity. It is the lightest running shoe ever made by Adidas, 97g in a UK 8.5. It swaps the rods for a carbon U-shaped element at the edge of the midsole, gains 30% in lightness and improves economy by 1.6% over its predecessor. It is an elite, single-race item, not for training.
Asics, Saucony, Hoka, New Balance and Puma
- Asics Metaspeed Sky Tokyo and Edge Tokyo: these are the current top generation, released in 2025. They debut FF Leap foam (ATPU base) combined with FF Turbo+, with a carbon plate. Both weigh about 170g in a men's US 9. The Sky Tokyo serves those who lengthen their stride; the Edge Tokyo favors those who turn over cadence more.
- Saucony Endorphin Pro 5: PWRRUN HG foam over PWRRUN PB with a more carved carbon plate, stack of 39.5mm at the heel and 31.5mm at the forefoot, 8mm drop, about 206g. It is the brand's most accessible and versatile supershoe, from the 5k to the marathon.
- Saucony Endorphin Elite 3: released on June 1, 2026. It brings a double layer of supercritical TPEE IncrediRUN foam and a carved carbon plate, about 207g. It is Saucony's top race shoe.
- Hoka Cielo X1 3.0: arrived in February 2026, at 275 dollars. An even more responsive double PEBA midsole and aggressive rocker, about 198g in a men's US 9. Made for the half and marathon for those who like rocker and fast transition.
- New Balance SuperComp Elite v5: PEBA FuelCell midsole with a 38% stiffer plate, 25% narrower platform, stack of 40mm at the heel and 32mm at the forefoot, 8mm drop, about 198g. It is a stable racer, without a rocket profile, good for long races.
- Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3: released in April 2025, at the Boston Marathon, at 300 dollars. Decoupled midsole with NITROFOAM ELITE and a restructured PWRPLATE, stack of 40mm and 32mm, 8mm drop, only 170g. It is one of the lightest supershoes with the most aggressive forefoot on the market.
What is still expectation for 2026 and 2027
Asics has already validated three development models on the World Athletics list called MS5 TYPE-1, ME5 TYPE-1 and MR2 TYPE-1, probable successors to the Sky, Edge and Ray. As of the close of this text the brand has not confirmed a commercial name or public sale date, so treating these as a certain 2027 release would be a guess. On Nike's side, prototypes of the next top cycle appear with a larger midsole and a sock-like upper that rises over the ankle, but with no final model announced. House rule: where the 2027 date has not been confirmed, it is expectation, not fact.
