Eating well in Rio is easy: the hard part is choosing the region
Whoever trains in Rio eats healthy in three movements: the fruit juice made on the spot at the door of the street, the natural food lunch that sustains the workday and a generation of vegetarian and fresh fish houses that turned the city into a laboratory of plant-based cooking, from Teva in Ipanema to .Org in Barra. The scene was not born yesterday: Delírio Tropical has served salads since 1983, Zazá completes more than two decades and Polis Sucos presents itself as the first juice house of Rio.
Zona Sul concentrates the addresses, but the guide does not stop there: the Centro holds the lunch of those who work, Tijuca and Barra have real healthy chains and the organic fairs spread through the neighborhoods supply the fridge of the week. Below, real places organized by region, with what to order and why each one works for those who train and for gathering the table afterwards.
Ipanema and Leblon (Zona Sul)
The strip between Ipanema and Leblon concentrates the highest density of healthy cooking in Rio: historic juice house, award-winning 100% plant-based bistro, fish restaurant to sit down with friends and a green grocer of organics to supply the week.
- Teva Bistrô (Av. Henrique Dumont, 110, Ipanema). 100% plant-based and organic cooking with real restaurant technique. Order the jackfruit taco, the Brócolis Deusa Verde or the Manchurian cauliflower: it solves the training day without feeling like a diet, which helps even when the table has people who do not care about eating well.
- Zazá Bistrô Tropical (Rua Joana Angélica, 40, Ipanema). Thai fused with Brazilian in a two-story house that can take a big group after training. The white fish with mango ice cream and the seared tuna with labneh are the quality protein orders, and the cold appetizer tasting solves the whole table.
- ViaSete (Rua Garcia d'Ávila, 125, Ipanema). House of more than two decades with a declared healthy vocation. The salad bowls and the fish dishes serve the light lunch, and the place is good for bringing someone who is not on a diet.
- Polis Sucos (Rua Maria Quitéria, 70, Ipanema). The house that presents itself as the first juice house of Rio keeps squeezing real fruit on the spot. Juice, açaí in the bowl and, for those who want something more consistent, the Filé Polis, the house sandwich. It is the classic post-workout of those who run on the shore or at Lagoa.
- Hortifruti Natural da Terra (Av. Ataulfo de Paiva, 458, Leblon). Neighborhood green grocer with a dedicated organic department, organic eggs and its own bakery. It is not a restaurant: it is the supply of the week for those who train and cook.
Jardim Botânico, Botafogo and Lagoa
The inner strip of Zona Sul next to Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas brings together a cevicheria with poke on the menu, an award-winning vegetarian buffet and healthy lunch by weight for the workday.
- La Carioca Cevicheria (Rua Maria Angélica, 113, Jardim Botânico, with locations in Ipanema and Leblon). Classic and authorial ceviches, tiraditos and pokes on the same menu: quality protein in three neighborhoods, including the Leblon shore. A good call to gather the crew after a training session at Lagoa.
- Verde Vício (Rua Visconde de Ouro Preto, 47, Botafogo, and Rua Buenos Aires, 22, Centro). Healthy lunch where you build the plate. The dish of the day changes (the crispy crust chicken with mayo-free salpicão salad shows the level), Friday has homemade gnocchi with shrimp and the gourmet frozen meals, such as the salmon fillet with olive oil and herbs, save the dinner of the week.
- Naturalie Bistrô (Rua Visconde de Caravelas, Botafogo). Vegetarian lunch by chef Nathalie Passos with real plant protein: Veggie Feijoada, zucchini lasagna and even the Hamburguilho, a wheat burger with carrots and olives. Here and at Verde Vício the plate is paid by weight, which gives control over the size of the meal and the bill.
Centro and Tijuca
Whoever works or lives outside Zona Sul also has a real option. Delírio Tropical, the oldest healthy food house in the city, covers the Centro at lunchtime and Tijuca in the mall.
- Delírio Tropical (Rua da Assembléia, 36, Centro, and Shopping Tijuca, among other locations). The house that declares itself a healthy restaurant since 1983 and today covers the city with nine locations, including Botafogo, Ipanema, Gávea and Barra. Order the salads assembled on the spot or the healthy dishes of the day. It is the name that solves the weekday lunch of those who are in the Centro.
Barra da Tijuca (Zona Oeste)
Barra became a hub of natural and organic cooking: it has .Org Bistrô as an award-winning vegetarian reference and three Delírio Tropical locations in the malls of the region.
- .Org Bistrô (Av. Olegário Maciel, 175, Loja G, Barra da Tijuca). Organic vegetarian restaurant led by chef and dietitian Tati Lund, elected best vegetarian by VEJA Rio. The mushroom moqueca and the Bowl Oriental satisfy an athlete, Friday has vegan feijoada and Saturday has grilled cauliflower on the spit. Proof that plant-based food with technique convinces the whole table.
How to use the guide in practice
If the question is which region has the most options, the answer is Zona Sul: Ipanema and Leblon concentrate the highest density of addresses, from the juice on the spot to the fish dinner. If the rush is the work lunch, the Centro solves it with the Delírio of Rua da Assembléia and the Verde Vício of Rua Buenos Aires. In Barra, .Org and the Delírio locations in malls hold the region.
Worth the calendar: Friday has vegan feijoada at .Org and shrimp gnocchi at Verde Vício, Saturday has grilled cauliflower on the spit at .Org. And watch the hours: some houses open more for dinner, so confirm on the official channel before leaving home.
This guide is part of a series in which Darwin maps where to eat well training session after training session: healthy restaurants in Porto Alegre and healthy restaurants in Florianópolis are already out, with the same criterion of real place, what to order and why it works for those who train.
