The mistake that makes you buy the wrong whey
Almost everyone compares whey by the price of the tub. That is the fastest way to pay a lot for little protein. A 900g tub costs less than a 1kg one, but can yield less total protein. One brand advertises "32g per serving" and another "21g", except one of those servings weighs 40g and the other 30g. A single number settles this: how much each gram of actual protein costs. That is what we calculated, going to the official websites of nine Brazilian manufacturers in July 2026 and crossing price, serving size and the protein per serving declared on the label.
First, what you are buying
Whey is not one single thing. The label hides three quite different products, and the price follows:
- Concentrate (WPC): 70 to 80% protein by weight, with more lactose and fat. It is the cheapest and the best seller. For day-to-day mass gain, it is enough.
- Isolate (WPI): runs above 85 to 90% protein, with very little lactose (about 1.1% against 14.8% for concentrate, according to a study cited by CNN Brasil). It is the choice of the lactose intolerant and of those on restricted diets. It costs more.
- Hydrolyzate (WPH): isolate pre-broken into smaller fragments for faster absorption. The most expensive of the three, with modest practical gain for most people.
- 3W blend: mixes concentrate, isolate and hydrolyzate in the same tub, to combine cost and absorption speed. Max Titanium Top Whey 3W and Adaptogen Tasty Whey are examples.
The calculation that matters: reais per gram of protein
Here is the survey, ordered from cheapest to most expensive per gram of protein. The math is simple: price divided by the total protein in the tub (number of servings times the protein per serving declared on the label). All prices come from the manufacturers' official websites, collected in July 2026, some on sale.
The direct reading: entry-level concentrates deliver about three times more protein per real than the premium hydrolyzate. That does not make the hydrolyzate bad, it solves a different problem (absorption speed). But if your goal is to hit your daily protein target while spending less, concentrate wins by a wide margin.

The elephant in the room: the amino spiking fraud
Cost per gram presupposes one thing: that the protein on the label really exists. It does not always exist. In December 2024, Senacon (Brazil's National Consumer Secretariat) ordered nine websites to suspend sales of 48 whey brands, based on an analysis by ABENUTRI that pointed to suspected amino spiking, the practice of adding cheap amino acids to inflate the protein content that the standard test detects.
It is not the first time. In 2018, an independent test by Proteste covering 30 brands found a product sold as "isolate" that had only 69.5% real protein, far from the 90% expected of an isolate. The lesson holds forever: a price that is too low on something promising lots of protein is a reason to be suspicious, not to celebrate.
What each profile is for
- Best cost per gram, mass focus: entry-level concentrates (Growth, Black Skull, Soldiers, New Millen). Lots of protein per real, accepting a bit more lactose and fat.
- Lactose intolerant or restricted diet: isolate (Dux Isolado and equivalents). Less lactose, more protein by weight, lighter digestion.
- Post-workout with fast absorption: hydrolyzate or 3W blend. It makes sense for those who train fasted or want fast-digesting protein right after the effort, accepting paying more.
- Known brand and wide distribution: Integralmédica, Max Titanium and Probiótica dominate pharmacy and gym shelves. Intermediate cost, availability everywhere.
How to check it yourself in 30 seconds
You do not need to trust any ranking. Take the label and do the math: divide the tub weight by the serving size to find the number of servings, multiply by the protein per serving, and divide the price by that total. The result is your real per gram of protein. Compare two tubs with that number and you will never go wrong again because of a pretty package or an inflated serving. And remember: protein per serving is worth more than any "premium" seal on the tub.
So you do not have to do the math by hand, we built the Darwin whey comparator: the same products with type, serving, protein, full composition (calories, carbohydrate, sugar, fat and sodium per serving) and cost per gram side by side, each datum with its official source.
